Slide Closes Trail

Yes it rained heavily

But how and why the slide took out hillside is very much open to debate.

Too bad too, the trail from Rushbrook to Seal Cove was well used and the city and volunteers were methodically improving the trail with aluminum bridges and brush cutting.

Building on the slope

When one is at the slide the same likely suspects appear upslope as in most these instances where a slide comes down along this stretch—chances are someone has been “working” upslope to get a better view—often destabilizing the hillside in the process.

CN used to police these properties quite closely—but since the City took over they have been left with a relatively free hand.

A closer Look

Both houses upslope look like there has been recent activity; House 2 was built within the year. The cement footing was added after the slide to give some support to the deck.

Because this is the least slope around a city sewer line from Overlook comes down on its way to ocean..

Closer Look

Upslope it looks like slide may have originated upper center.

There are conflicting versions—

One goes that house on left was pumping water from a flooded basement – presumably the reason for the plastic piping.

Whatever this is usual reason fro slides along this stretch—the upslope resident alters the drainage somehow—either by diverting flows or cutting down vegetation which was holding the soil.

Whatever—

The trail is now fairly dangerous because one can not see how “stable” the ocean side dirt is and that is the side one is forced to walk over.

There isa well beaten path already.
