Overview of Sockeye salmon Diversity on North Coast

–There are surprisingly many small sockeye systems on Coastal BC

 

Chris Woods work has shown the North Coastal systems differ genetically  from Skeena R & Fraser R systems
(see graphic below)

 

And a look at run timing suggests 3 different groups in Area 5 (table below)

 

 

Diversity Lost: runs slowly lost over time

Graphic (enlarged)- shows familiar story Many runs still strong till mid ‘60s – a few systems peak and then all collapse

Diversity suggested by run timing

By inspection early, mid, and late migrations with an early spawner included

Again the outer islands look distinctive and require DNA work and Biology
