While the names are the same the specimens look so different that local taxonomy might be mistaken. The California WWW looks very professional

Is this an umbilicus??

 

Both guide books that treat local BC Fungi only give 2 species of tooth fungi to chose from.

The illustration right shows we have the “navel” bearing species here (Hydnum umbilicatum) but see below.

 

 

 

 

The value of spore prints

 

Here is a tooth fungi collected in Smithers by the Shaws.

The brown spore print means it could not be a Hypnum. In fact modern taxonomy has split these fellows into a different family altogether.
