Kaien Island is a good illustration of the problems encountered
in NorthCoast Rainforests.
Recent glaciation has stripped away much of the soil. The last
ice age has left over steepened mountain sides that periodically slide even without our roads and clear-cuts.
Given high rainfall and bare rocks, most flat areas have
developed into muskeg (organic soils) here located both on
mountain top and along shorelines or steams.

trout go from this illustration. Note how even minor
streams are home to fish, |
