Kaien Island is a good illustration of the problems encountered in NorthCoast Rainforests.
Recent glaciation has stripped away much of the soil. The last ice age has left over steepened mountain sides that periodically slide even without our roads and clear-cuts.

Given high rainfall and bare rocks, most flat areas have developed into muskeg (organic soils) here located both on mountain top and along shorelines or steams.
