Winter Festival time

Nucella lamellosa

Dog whelk with egg cases

Observations:

During January – February it is common to see large gatherings of Nucella snails, and gradually the numbers of egg cases increases. These ‘rendezvous’ are not always in same location or even proximity which implies that over time the colonies wax and wane in numbers. (Images are captured from videos)

More typical though is a few dozen individuals hidden deep in a crevice or some other place of concealment. The eggs are harder to spot and one can not be sure what species is laying them. It would be interesting to find if any large gatherings are to be found along the urbanized section of PR harbour.

A Rendezvous with hundreds of individuals
