Rough Skinned Newt—found along Hays Creek in PR

Found by some young lads along Hays Creek by Civic Center

I thought it was a salamander—

But the literature says it is obviously a newt as it has not costal ridges see diagram along its side.

Oops a mistake

The boys handled this fellow so I could picture it—they were gentle and the newt did not seem too frightened—but the literature warns this fellow is “toxic

“Care should be taken when handling these animals. Wash hands after holding newts and do not touch eyes or mouth area”

The Orange underside is a tip off it’s TOXIC

This guy (or gal, I can’t tell) while nondescript from above has a strikingly colourful underside—we should have known he was poisonous—

That is a clue to all would be predators—“eat me and you will regret it”
