Overview of Chum salmon Diversity on North Coast

Chum Salmon

DIVERSITY

–“benign neglect”??

Or are we loosing CHUM diversity and  not noticing??

Alaskan work implies > diversity than expected
(see graphic below)

And a look at run timing suggests 3 different groups in Area 5 (table below)

The “outer Banks groups” looks especially distinct

An Earlier look at diversity using protein differences found 6 stocks in AK BC (see below left)

Note relative uniqueness of Prince of Wales – these Islands just north of Canadian _US Border

Graph of area 5 by stream system over time

RUN TIMING Patterns

I have pasted these from a XLS file taken from individual stream reports in FishWizard

Some of these look to simply be mistakes

But by inspection looks to be at least 3 different groups based upon run timing (early, mid, & late)

Some of these runs are prime candidates for DNA work plus need more basic biology

Note how the most aberrant are from similar areas – e.g., Outer Banks (915-560000)

AREA 5

Methods

The above table was selected from the 48 systems reported in Area 5 with chum salmon. Either main producers or systems that have high Sockeye or Pinks were used; data was then sorted by watershed codes

Each stream listed 2x so as to allow sorting of migrations and spawning independently.

Top ten systems for Chum escapement ranked in order
