BARNACLES

Intro page

Darwin called the present geologic era “the age of barnacles”

The image left shows a semi-exposed shore in Hecate that is dominated by the 4 locally common species: Balanus gladula, Semibalanus cariosa, Pollicipes polymerus, and Chthamalus spp

Barnacles are Weird

It took naturalists almost a century to convince themselves these armored animals were not a form of mollusc (clam) but were more related to crabs and insects: the planktonic phases (excellent account images here) were similar to known animals which  then transformed into barnacles (standing on head, using legs to feed with, etc.)

Since Darwin

The Balanus group can be differentiated from Chthamalus by how overlaps Rostrum (Latin for prow/ bow of a boat). The carina is Latin for keel of a boat
