Barnacles & Limpets settle out

Post Bloom

Monitor growth

Semibalanus settles in almost pure colonies

Grow extremely fast – this will monitor over next month

Image left doesn’t show the Semibalanus juveniles well but above is same site

See last year where seastars removed old growth Semibal

Limpets keep their areas cleared of Semibalanus

One of the first things that catches ones attention is how some areas don’t have any barnacles while others are densely packed

Closer look reveals inevitably one to many limpets

Limpets Settled in April

See last month where I begin to see the limpets aggregating in this (then) cleared area

Limpets appear to keep their forage areas clear of Semibalanus – and superficially both the limpets and the barnacles look to be all the same species and ‘age’ --- but closer look disproves this even aged hypothesis showing many sizes implying settled over several weeks to a month for limpets

Limpets appear all same species

Just different ages

Note how quickly the Semibalanus has diagnostic plates and beak – both magnified – the marking to right is 1 mm on the ruler
