“Indian seaweed”

Spring delicacy

Still harvested by local 1st Nations see ethnobotanist report in CJB for Hartley Bay area

  Collecting season just beginning

This is the staple – collected and dried in large quantities – usually around “Easter”

Not very plentiful yet

At Tenderest

Either pick it now while most delicate, or wait a couple weeks when until reaches peak size and coverage—

Of course, this might be a ‘bad year’ and it won’t double in size ---

Upper intertidal – different species – just past peak

Some people find this species better tasting

But it is smaller and has to be picked early in spring

Lots of it

But the pale color shows it has already past its best eating stage and is putting all its energy into reproduction --- still the Limpets love it and are making it into more limpets as fast as can

See last years entry on this site when porphyra 'past peak'-- or here is MPG 850K of it

Links

Japanese use similar spp for “Nori”
