Littorina spp

Periwinkle explosion

Both species

Caught my eye

Easy to see when damp before sun hits wall ---notice all those small black spots on this barnacle wall

And below some magnification

Here is some magnification – the barnacles are mainly Chthamalus (ca 5 mm diameter)

The periwinkles are all juveniles – recently arrived

Speckled ones are L scutulata and one with whorls are L sitkana

Limpets too?

While the Periwinkles are arguably this years – the limpets not clear if ‘yearlings’ or not

Same wall after sun shines on it

I am not sure where all the limpets went; perhaps they just blend in better after their shell dries – or they hide to avoid ‘heat stroke’

Both periwinkles spp present as juveniles image left

Above is good contrast between Chthalamus and Balanus barnacles – below is same original image taken into MS Paint and saved in part

Both species

Here showing the guide book characters at very early age: whorl lines (= ‘raised ridges’) in L sitkana and ‘checkers’ in L scutulata
