Aging Periwinkles?

Count ‘growth lines’?

Can we get age by counting the whorl lines?

Hypothesis:

Growth lines on limpets = ‘raised ridges’

Thus a means of comparing ages of periwinkles

L sitkana – no

L. scutulata maybe

---

Maybe in L scutulata

Here it looks like Littorina scutulata may have significant info where growth lines and aging are accessible – note the differences in spacing on the larger periwinkle to left towards it’s base

Close look at L Sitkana – negative

Smallest sized to right at around 1 mm

Probably can’t count the ‘ridge lines’ to get age—the largest one above has fewer but wider spaced ridges – but predict it will give relative age of the sub-adults (along with size)

 Smallest seen

Note ridge lines

 Those are full grown adults
