Hecate in Summer (2005)

How atypical??

Perhaps 2004 was > atypical

Hecate is getting inflow of warm (even hottish) waters –above right

As above left shows the water is coming in off the pacific. The California Current System (CCS) appears working well as California to Vancouver Island getting upwelling of cooler waters (at least at this level of resolution-- NESDIS image source

Reports of dead seabirds from California to Washington have made us (general public) more sensitive to the changes going on along our Pacific beaches.

Monitoring Seabirds, sea lions, whales, salmon are the way we ‘see’ / measure marine ecosystem health

For broader oceanographic perspective read the excellent DFO State of Ocean 2004

Plankton Blooms in ‘upwelling’(?)

Cludy weather makes the Chlorophyll imagery iffy – but seem to be getting some bloom conditions off the central coast (thus upwelling from weak NW winds?)
