Predatory seastar removes semi-bal

And all the biodiversity too

Semibalnus barnacle provided habitat for algae and limpets

Barnacle Facilitated diversity

Provided attachment site for Fucus seaweed, after it was  gone then the large limpets persisted in cracks for a season but are they too disappeared by August 2005

Can’t recapture site

The Semibalanus barnacle does not seem to be able to ‘recapture’ the site – other genera of barnacles now dominate site.
Led to interesting query: what has changed? --- conclusion – current thru ‘gut’ not as strong as before

Old Growth”

I haven’t photos of this site much earlier than this --- until few years (5-10?) ago Semibalanus would cover the rock walls & boulders within a year or so of an opening. Then came the Fucus on the barnacle then the limpets and snails etc . I suspect the larger Semibalanus could live for decades

Seastars are keystone predators

This was basically the feeding of one or two seastars – and it took couple of years for them to remove all the Semibalanus
