Descent from known into unknown intertidal areas during extreme low tides in July

Looking for abalone

Hasn’t returned to old haunts

Several days 0 tides allow exploration

Expected to find juvenile abalone – but nothing seen

Entering lower intertidal in summer is like a ‘different world’ --- so much diversity – which is so seldom accessible --- even scuba diving would not help here as the laminarian kelps, the Nereocystis (as left) would make the area too treacherous to dive into

The surf grass is Phyllospadix scouleri

1= Henricia leviuscula

more images

2 = Acmaea mitra (w encrusting coralline)

3 = Codium setchelli with epiphytes

These at least are familiar

Farther down less well known by me

But the seastar is Dermasterias imbricata

1 = tube worm(?)

2 = purple coral (?)

(similar to hydrocoral)

3= orange sponge(?)

My gloved finger in lower left corner

A worm in center of picture

Location lower intertidal East Island

Below – same spot – finger lower left

Coralline algae and more ‘don’t knows’

Strange new land

That bar at top of picture (by word Nereocystis) used to have lots abalone --- but too slippery to go look and tide rising quickly – plus can barely make out the red urchins which means abs will not settle there anymore

I am too cautious
