I tried following spat fall on the smaller boulder last year – but area too chaotic – was both moved and cleaned off by predators

Spat Actively settling

Boulder watching

Noticed the boulder w blue arrow had new spat while larger one not

Anemone is left hanging --- breccia levels move up & down

Stability in chaos

Contrasting Boulders

The larger one is ‘stable’ but the one with blue arrow is moved around by strong waves

The latter showed active spat settling in early August (see below for details) – while the ‘stable’ one shows none – How do the spat choose one and not the other? Are the ‘avoiding’ ‘predator’ on the more ‘stable’ boulder

Anemones may be ‘left overs’ from last year

But small brown dots left drew my attention

Above is the actively settling one and below is closer look

The limpets (2 kinds?) are this years

Different spat sizes interpreted as differing settling dates

Here 1-6

Here is virtual magnification --- at least 6 different sizes (ages?) of Chthalmus barnacle – Nothe the beak on the Semibalanus (1st year?)
