Ulva linza is
a common summer time alga in both the Pacific ocean and the Atlantic To tell if
this very similar appearing green alga is ‘just’ U linza we are currently
doing the DNA |

Tube
like basal system (where it attaches) not evident in field material but clear
once put on a herbarium sheet for preservation (below) |

The clear area of thallus shows has recently released reproduction – so even though still small sized it is putting resources into spreading out over other areas |

The real
linza |
|
Before
‘doing the DNA’ was practical we had to rely upon trying to find unique
characters such as the way a plant develops – linza from the summer starts
off as a uniseriate germling and then thickens – we have found other ‘linza-look
alikes’ that start off as a prostrate crust – as I am betting the spring
fellow will do |
