Hypothesis to test

February 2005

South facing has different communities

Barnacles seem to dominate the south face in upper intertidal and many algal species found elsewhere on Island are missing

On this February day I was looking for Prasiola which does not seem to like the south face

Or perhaps the Porphyra just out competes it

(this series photos move from SE side to SW side and from less wave exposure to more)

Porphyra covers most upper

There is a tinge of green here as at the p but even here the direction is more east than south

Streaks in upper

This ‘streaking’ is a Verrucaria lichen that covers upper intertidal but on southface even it looks ‘unhappy’’

Moving more to West

Here is some good Prasiola but it is on a surface and not directly facing to south

No sign of Greens here – looking west

More Exposed

This SW corner is more exposed and will be explored later date

All those barnacles/ mussels in lower indicate heavy wave action
