The Ulothrix that grows on Fucus as above has a well developed basal system when grown in culture (below left) -- it is not clear if it is thus different species from the one on 'rocks' -- |
All
Ulothrix over-summer as a codiolum growing endophytically in either red crusts
or other upright algae
Grown
under different culture conditions – the cells have different dimensions –
the above is short day (e.g. 8 hours light) vs long day (e.g. 16 hours light)
Reproductive cells -- if magnification were higher could see individual 'gametes and their red 'eyespots' When
thalli like these placed in seawater the gametes begin to wiggle and then
'escape' thru cell wall pore |

Another
species (Genus??)
While
currently still in Ulothrix U. mucosa has a strong reaction to acids placed on
them and thus easily identified |
