Ulothrix

As seen in culture

The Ulothrix that grows on Fucus as above has a well developed basal system when grown in culture (below left) -- it is not clear if it is thus different species from the one on  'rocks' --

All Ulothrix over-summer as a codiolum growing endophytically in either red crusts or other upright algae

Grown under different culture conditions – the cells have different dimensions – the above is short day (e.g. 8 hours light) vs long day (e.g. 16 hours light)

Reproductive cells -- if magnification were higher could see individual 'gametes and their red 'eyespots'

When thalli like these placed in seawater the gametes begin to wiggle and then 'escape' thru cell wall pore

Another species (Genus??)

While currently still in Ulothrix U. mucosa has a strong reaction to acids placed on them and thus easily identified
