Fuzzy greens

Ulothrix spp

Here growing on (epiphytic on) Fucus

Is this the same species as presently growing on “rocks”?

(Usually it is on ‘tar spot’ a red algal crust that is the alternate life history phase of mastocarpus as below

Early in the season

Yes I know it only looks like a hint of green but the there are hundreds nay thousands of 1 cell wide filaments there and they will become more ‘obvious’ later in the spring. But they will soon then ‘disappear’ into the alternate phase (codiolum stage”) which often lives within this black encrusting algae it is growing on now

For more details see the file where  cultured (grown under controlled conditions in growth chambers)  Ulothrix  illustrated
