Acrosiphonia In CA too	Green ropes
	“coalita” has precedence over mertensia

Grows fast in early spring and then disappears

(has alternate stage in life history)

Recent DNA work has reduced several species to just 2 – one with lots of hooks and other with none to few

How Fast does it Grow??

	Main Island
	Typical patch here – on April 9^th is about four inches long --- I bet it doubles in couple weeks

Better growth in Bay area

	About 6+ -- but lower too in intertidal

Acrosiphonia is opportunist

	Looks for clearings
	Many spring annuals have a macroscopic thallus that grows fast and then disappears into alternate stage – capitalizing on nutrient rich spring bloom period – here it is growing (on a stone in Bay) with a Monostroma that has a similar ‘strategy’
