Winter kill on exposed side

More waves less damage

Corallines survive better in high wave impact areas

Tide wasn’t that low but waves were calmer so I could get out on this wave exposed side and look around

Colors don’t show well but brightest pink is one and most bleached white areas in the three area

Below mainly articulated coralline illustrated though bleached crusts seen

Some red algae appear to survive well and may ‘capture’ the area – by being the only survivor

(see below)

Same area as above

Damage > w less wave exposure

Mainly the corallines are affected; that is a brown Laminarian that has lots its blades over the winter but ready to come back

Type 3 damage

And below a Katrina chiton ‘hides’ in a crack

Mainly articulated corallines pictured here

Red crusts and upright thalli appear undamaged by cold

These small crusts have a plant attached –look like Mastocarpus

The small ‘bumps’ at m suggest Mastocarpus

Red crust is thriving (M?)

In the foreground are the articulated corallines c which are seriously affected and looks like a coralline crust at c again dying off where above the waterline.

But the red crust looks ‘happy’. (I suggest it must avoid direct sunlight though and does best on North facing sides
