Winter Kill in lower intertidal

Cold damages mainly Corallines

Those white areas are dead tissue

 

  It ain’t the Tropics

 

Corallines are not winter hardy --- on image left the areas lower in intertidal have gone unscathed – but looks like when exposed long to air and cold the tissue dies

 

 

 

 

 

Here it is in a midlevel tidal pool

While the water line of tide pool doesn’t show in these images those parts above ‘permanent’ pool level, have been killed

Prionitis stipes below or pre- break off to left

I have stippled in this low tidal pool which again has the tissue that was exposed to cold air (above pool level) being damaged

 

 

Here is a coralline from lower intertidal that did not have such severe damage with only apical segments  being damaged
