At Nadir

Maybe 50% less

Compare with last spring image below

While the 3 patches are still evident in broad outlines each has lost much of its diversity and coverage over the winter

This is a pretty exposed area so not unexpected.

In a few months the area will be turning green (see below) and I visited the site to see if anything suggested that change – nothing obvious this early in season though

Here are the areas in 2004

This page from last spring will show the greening and can be used to compare with February 2005

-- And see below for more detail of the greening last year

Different angles but same location – 7 months later

Last may there were more coverage and species here; I came back to this site to see what is causing the ‘Greening” – in Feb 2005 there is no sign of any green but see below --- note the Endocaldia all gone (Endo)

Here is the same without the green lines; we can see the algae to left of caliper is ‘different’ – taller and more robust – we will follow over next few months –

Note to lower right of the 2 looks like some Endocladia remains

Different angle 2/2005 vs 5/2004
