Upper Burn Site

Can you see the difference?

Regen to left of numbers

Compare with earlier

Small “regen” thalli of Mastocarpus blades and

Endocladia are found in the cracks and here marked with small B

The tape measure goes from the ‘jagged rock’ (see below) to corner of tidal pool seen in other images for ‘positioning’

F = Fucus plants

The Mastocarpus colony (here to left of numeral 1 etc.) is evident in the August 2001 image—use the lineament as marker in top image

The crustose phase appears to be present too in these images

For detail see below

Compare with Aug 2001 image

On this jagged triangular rock (In upper image it is at the green tape measure) the contrast between ‘old growth’ and the regen is clear – these large Semibalanus barnacles (above the S ) have no equivalent in the ‘regen’.

Nor does one see the large areas of ‘black crust’ (1 = Matocarpus crust phase)

I interpret the light tips of the Fucus (F )to mean reproduction is imminent – and a sign of comparative older age
