Regeneration

Upper Burn site

The upper photo taken August 2001, almost 10 months after construction material was burned, site shows a green (algae) with blackened bare rock.

Note the jagged rocks center and the raised relief upper right for reference

Burn Limits

Image looks down shore towards ocean

Compare w March 2004

Superficially it looks like the site has regenerated, but we argue here that after 4 years the site is still in ‘early stages’.

Even at this distance we can seaward from dotted line has similar color (coverage) as from 2001

Comparing photos – Note unburned area right side of images

Regeneration in March 2004

Use jagged rock center right for reference point

Both images (looking up-shore) same site—note unburned areas in 2001 sharp contrast not apparent in 2004

The “backish crust” is very slow growing

While not showing well in these images the blackish crust in 2004 = 2001 (on jagged rock). I will re-do the 2004 in August when ‘winter diatom’ gone and ‘black crust’ show up better)

Closer Look

Legacy semibalanus barnacles etc – arrows show same “crust” over time
