L sitkana from pool

Periwinkle heart-land

Both in the tidal pools and in rock crevices – lots of variation but are they really different species?
Here is the narrative for pool MOV02879.MPG ---image  to left is short & squat = ‘typical’ sitkana from pool

FEB 2004

Periwinkle ID – is that Littorina sitkana and L scutulata? Or all variations within one species?

When shooting footage I was not convinced 2 spp but re-viewing it later I can ‘see’ long narrow with checkered shell vs squat of tidal pool

-- periwinkle_2880.wmf 795K

2 long and narrow (L scutulata?) vs 1 short and stout (sitkana)

Another pool-- Next Generation/ age class

Here juveniles (L sitkana) can be seen just above water line (yellow pointer) adults along with mussels and fish in pool

Just emerging

I wonder how old this periwinkle (L sitkana) is and how long it will take it to become adult sized—6 weeks? – Video is of this pool but smaller age class difficult to see except when removed as above-- TPL_04APR09_ 033.mpg 864K

Repeats “variation” material with more detail in videos

Here narrative where “wall” seen to have longer vs squatter --- periwinkle-2877.WMV (768K)

Variation on rock face too

Narrative where 2 smaller from wall and the larger from tidal pool—‘Differences, if any, not obvious’  MOV02876.MPG 768K  better detail than above video
