Shell Breccia scours rock faces

Weedy algae move in

And lots barnacle ‘spat fall’ in spring

At other times of the year parts of this area may be covered with the shell breccia. The storms move it around.

But the cleared areas are useful to follow a known year class over time (or until the next storm surge removes them)

Another benefit is to follow how growth compares with other year classes on sites

Site 1

The Porphyra, Acrosiphonia etc., utilize ‘cleared’ areas to settle, grow in spring— all ‘over-winter’ as microscopic plants (alternate phase) that reproduce is early spring

The Porphyra is perfect for picking to make ‘nori’ or “Indian Seaweed”

Barnacle Juveniles ‘everywhere’

Site 1

Site 2

More diversity here

Not only the Porphyra and mature Semibalanus but anemones and limpets add to color (below) --- note the juvenile barnacle seems to be evenly spread and same age/ size as other rock

See how limpets keep its area ‘cleared’ of spat

How old are these mature Semibalanus? Some ‘yearlings’ also evident as is another species

Site 3

Very interesting

The triangular bolder under the “3” was so interesting will give it a full page--- because it is a small island --- can assume its inhabitants (limpets. snails, etc) will not move in or out – and by extension most have settled here directly from plankton
