Where are the Periwinkles?

In another month will be ‘everywhere’

Soon just walking in upper intertidal will be hard not to crunch scores

Prasiola pastures

Looks like lots of food for the periwinkles but few around.

A closer look did find them (see also ‘periwinkle heartland’), but they seemed to be staying close to tidal pools ‘protection’ or hiding places in rock crevices

(Yellow arrows indicate single or groups of Limpets which often some periwinkles share ‘niche’)

Favorite Hang out

Video of them in pool (mainly Littorina sitkana found in pools) Periwinkles_18Mar04.wmf– where some seen as copulators Periwinkle_18Mar04_copulator.wmf  image is not large enough to see head details

Sitkana above and L scutulata on right below

Lone periwinkle on Prasiola – ‘soon’ will have lots of company

Short and Squat? Or ‘long and narrow’? Depends on how one holds it

But either way total length to width differs from squat Sitkana seen above
