Limpet

 

One adult and maybe 20 juveniles of assorted sizes in this photo

 

 

 

Presumably all the same species of limpet but 2 barnacles present—the Semibalanus is evident even at this small (thus juvenile) stage because of the ‘thatching’. Note the inverted V where outline of ‘shell’ seen and no basal carbonate plate (diagnostic for Balanus spp)

The V acts as a measuring stick – thus smallest limpets here are about 1 cm long 

 

 

Barnacle comparison

These are small (thus young of year) barnacles and we can already distinguish Semibalanus type ‘thatching’ from the Chthamalus (either side yellow line)

That is my finger for size.
Note the characteristic ‘cross’ of Chthalamus plates at apex inverted V; contrast with the Semibalanus at opening of the V.

Limpet variation

Here interested in the lower section because numerous adults visible all the way down to the base (not shown here). One predicts a separate species down here than higher up.
