Semibalanus

Characteristic look of walls and “beak” (upper center)

(note limpets etc between barnacles)

Thatching”

These are in a more scoured area than above, making for a different look to walls

The “beaks” (1) are pointed; and slope down from one side (which is modified ---see empty one at center); they usually show a characteristic zipper like (VVV ) series where plates meet (right and below)

Note the Chthamalus (inside the 0 for size comparison

Here is a video of a ‘beak’ (tergum+scutum) (left image) moving toward upper (carina) wall (maximum defense?) right when sense my hand moving above them

I could also hear them making a clicking sound sa beaks met walls.

Empty barnacles found in breccia; one of them still has the “Beak” inside, which I removed

Left: Seen from base (contrast with solid calcareous base in Balanus spp.)

Beak (the tergum) and ‘zippered’ scutum

Note: the zippered Scutum and the especially the diagnostic ‘tubular’ construction of the Semibalanus wall
