The
combining of DFO type catch data along with local knowledges (TEK etc) – especially
in Megan Moody presentation and Victor’s account of information available in
Explorers’ journals. HBC journals etc |
|
|
The Elders
speak |
|
Eulachon
is like our butter—Eulachon is like gold (currency) --- Eulachon is what bound
(different generations) together Many
elders spoke of earliest memories in grease making camps – where they were
part of the crew – catching, rendering etc |
|
|
The Eulachon
Nations or Eulachon Coast – to use Norman Dale’s terms |
|
Moody
presentation strength was in combining available information from as many
different river systems as available and looking for the trends |
|
|
Trends |
|
This
is abundance from 1987 to 2006 –superficially there is a decrease Eulachon biomass
from rivers in south to those in the north (with latter remaining healthiest
, longest) |
|
|
Hake Shrimp
Climate Change hypothesis tested |
|
Again
the presentation of a matrix showing to what degree each system affected by say
Hake biomass, or shrimp trawl catch or increases in SST etc was the strong
point of Moody thesis work |
|
|
Hay’s
conundrum |
|
Doug
Hay is the resident expert in all Things Eulachon --- he pointed out the trend
from south to north of decreased abundance and concluded that broad an effect
must mean the ‘cause’ is not to be found in rivers (locally) but on regional
basis Plus
DFO offshore research trawls have for numerous years in 2000s found high
Eulachon biomass (high Eulachon Index) --- so why are they not showing up in
the rivers? Are they going to smaller rivers? – They must be reproducing
somewhere etc |
|
I looked at Innlander
in passing in 2007 when discussing ‘homelessness’ in PR My earlier – new
siding ordered by council |
I will return to Eulachon again
later
|
|
Inlander
