I suggest 2008
spring bloom peaked On 24th
– 25th in N Hecate Looks like in
decline by 26th (presumably
nutrients being used up )
Note the
blue arrow – image left |
For
what ever reason the light yellow area (blue arrow, left image) is not
blooming as intensely as areas north and south of it Seems
to wax and wane in size --- various hypotheses suggest themselves |
Bloom going
on before the sunny weather? |
While
neither image satisfactory (clouds hid from view) --- the May 16th
image suggests a full bloom was going on in Hecate & QC Sound |
Both 2007
and 2006 cool but not as cool as 2008 |
Note lack of
May 2005 ‘bloom’ OR to CA (yellow line)
Ditto 2004
but not as bad – 2005 El Nino – (west winds slacked off and nesting seabirds
etc starved |
At monthly
level – May 2003 looks strongest bloom of series for Hecate (we’ll check back
later for 2008) |
The
Temperature anomalies (3 images below) for 3rd week in May --- do not
seem to relate to the bloom activity Note
while offshore BC still coolish in 2008 – looks like warmer water on its way
towards California – (all those clear sunny days) |
