Day 236
(August 24th in 2008) --- Ice cover in Arctic – Northwest Passage |
|
Note
how Canadian Arctic (arrow) almost circum-navigable – Contrast with day 236
in 2007 where Russian Arctic more open and the total ice coverage less than
this year (so far) – Note too day 236 in 2006 where again Russian arctic
looks more navigable--- Of interest is Day 236 in 2005 which had warmest ever
recorded annual temperature globally – thus something more than a year’s high
SSTs in Pacific, etc driving this annual melting. See
my earlier (dated 12/2006) where I
suggested Russian route ‘better’(then) |
How
atypical was summer 2008?
|
This
averaged temperature (1971-2000) is for PR Airport readings
Only July
2008 ‘coolish’ May even ‘hot’ |
A
city gardener was being very glum about how cold this year was – I parried
that I thought it had been over all rather typical --- for which I received a
withering look of contempt ---- So I went to Environment Canada to check out
how cool it was – note these are averages for daily averages – thus tend to
lose a lot of day to day variability |
|
Looks like
June July were cooler than ‘average’ – but not by much and August so far is
again ‘warmer’ than average |
|
Data from
NOAA NCEP Global
Precipitation pages – note days missing for June
and July (as per records for YPR airport – only available precip data
left in PR) |
Days with
Rains make it seem cooler than it was? |
