Another close up of sewer outfall

Are all those dead barnacles found up here too?

(yes)

Had to go back and look again – now that I am seeing that many juvenile barnacle ‘shells’ are ‘empty’ thus dead ---

It seems doubtful that ‘heat’ is killing them – the hot days happened when tide in during hottest

So I went higher up on outfall to see if story the same – it was

A reference point

This is approximately the blue arrow in previous fig

Site 1

Yes almost all the lighter coloured barnacle species are dead for example: D

Site 2

For whatever reason this is a richer area than previous ‘close-ups’—note Fucus juveniles. limpet juveniles  and periwinkles

The light colored juvenile appears mostly dead while the greyish juvenile is only occasionally – example D

Another rich area

Previous Sewer Outfall:

1--May overview of Outfall project

2—May attempt to monitor South side but new critters too small to ID

3—look at lower end w ‘seepage’ N vs S

4—earlier where 1st see North has different spp than South

‘Lower South Side:  yellow arrow and blue arrows

Lighter juvenile barnacles as Semibalanus

Before I had seen the wavy lines of Atypical and thought the juveniles were Balanus glandula --- but this image shows the wavy line is seen in adult when ‘beak’ relaxes from ‘Typical’ position—see my previous for differences B gladula, Semibalnus and Chthalmus
