‘Mountain Ash’

Sorbus

After the elderberry blooms

Escaped all over town

Sorbus belongs to the Rosaceae family as does Thimbleberry etc

The trees are derived from European ornamentals but go ‘wild’ around here quickly

Probably the native spp are present as shrubs around town at same time if looked for them

This site looked at Mtn Ash in 1999 and came to same conclusion

How Many styles?

Keys to differentiate the 4 species found in BC use characters of leaf and flower

How many leaves

Again the number of leaves, how ‘fuzzy’ they are and how they are ‘toothed’ are used to diagnose which species

Here the Styles look to number 4 – or one which divides into 4 at apex?

Fallen petals like spring snow on sidewalks

And soon it is over

After a week the petals are already falling and the flowers taking on a brownish tinge – all too soon will be the bright berries of fall
