Alders as “pheno-meter”

Following development of Spring

Some First Nations went to pick ‘seaweed’ when the alder was in full leaf --- it measured how fast ‘spring’ was progressing for them

In series below the few alder along sidewalk are developing faster than those in the vacant lot ---

Compare this series with the spring plankton bloom in Hecate

About 2/3rds way for the ‘lot’ and full for the street

Almost fully expanded

Late April

Dandelions as spring monitor

Depends on weather – this seemed to be the maximum bloom before rains began
