Marbled Murrelet
 at risk???

MaMu for short

MaMu has almost become synonymous at LRMP for wasting time

This was at least the 3rd time ‘we’ have gone through this material

Experts?

Models and real information: 26 lakes were surveyed during nesting season  w radar looking for flying birds at dawn.
From that “data” a model was fabricated. (no attempt to find nests in NC LRMP area??)

That models supposes that if capable trees remain in an area the MaMu will utilize them for nesting. (capable = suitable)

From that various “experiments”  were done to see how many MaMu remained after some amount of trees cut --- MaMu would never be endangered if this model’s assumptions were true, a skeptic might say.

.

Are all tall trees suitable???

Might all this the battle of the model

Here is a quite elaborate presentation from SFU mapping out suitability for MaMu nesting using areas around lakes  that are “best” for MaMu

This site even has Diana lake as potentially good habitat--- Note the implication is that all areas are not equal and thus  some areas should be protected

The MaMu recovery team is aiming at 65% retention of existing North Coast  Marbled Murrelets
It is not apparent how the “New Era” model’s assumptions will work themselves out in reality

What was in the works: previous to the “New Era” the NDP planned to protect Marbled Murrelets using the Forest Practices Code – here was their strategy: you judge which has better chance of success

What a difference a year makes

Take Mountain Goats—Can’t we take their ‘critical habitat’ (winter feed areas in this case) and ‘protect them? Not in the New Era it seems. They have a “mocel” to prove protection is not necessary (not at risk.
