Diatom being bleached by SUN

Bleaching gradual

“2” below is the diatom being bleached – in area “4” diatom still ‘natural color’—to right of “3” most bleached

Spring time algae beginning to replace ‘winter’ diatom

Area 1 is beginning stages of a filamentous algae called Bangia –

3 is between two areas of a foliose algae called Porphyra

Above 3 and to its left is a green foliose algae called Prasiola

Closer look

Area 1 is south facing rock and seldom get covered by the diatom (too much sun?- even in winter?)

Area 2 is diatom covered but not yet bleached

Area 3 is bleaching – many shades of white were visible but not captured by camera

Area 4 is green algae Prasiola which thrives all winter/ spring then is ‘gone’ all summer

Areas being dried then bleached out
