Storm Watching

Lots of good ‘science’

November 11th storm

Buoy report 46183 - North Hecate Strait

30 foot waves off Central Coast BC

NOAA global marine graphical forecast page Pacific

Synopsis:

November 11th storm generated 30 foot waves offshore and gusts to 55 knots (see above)– at times looked like potential for hurricane force winds

Below 1st series of images follows system as moving inshore using satellite IR imagery

2nd series (below) uses composite IR/ barometric pressures to follow storm and get insights into what ‘controls’ direction (and intensity?)

3rd part has previous ‘storm’ stories this site – and links

Use dotted line (135W—white arrow) to follow storm’s easterly advance

Red arrows (right panel) show reverse ‘C’ as approach mainland—presumably center of developing low pressure

Following Nov 11th storm as moves onshore

Red area now touching Charlottes

Red now past Charlottes (below)

Storm weakening(?)as moves onto coastal mountains (Central Coast) – though strongest surface winds (locally) are in the ‘low’/ frontal zone (cleared area in Hecate etc)

And then inland

Forecast graphic right is from 12Z NOAA model – see this page for current
At that time potential of hurricane force winds developing

Developing low

Image right is Satellite composite IR image with barometric pressure overlaid – blue arrow is the low in center of ‘reverse C’ – See archives at this site for images (both

This composite image shows the 300 mb jet stream at same time --- note all those closely spaced contours with the cloud system underneath (yellow line)

Thus reason ‘jet stream’ shown in many weather prediction formats – implication the ‘front’ (between high barometric (lower left corner) pressures and lows(upper top center) controls ‘track’ of approaching system

Here is my 2006 November 18th storm page

I find the NOAA global marine graphical forecast page Pacific very useful
