Ocean heating up

Plankton in full bloom (see previous)

This page looks at cool spring of 2007 and asks if similar conditions reflected in in ocean – While I find SST similar to last year, still the main spring plankton bloom is late (as are the dandelions etc on land)

Looks like though land temperatures much cooler the ocean is heating up about same rate as in 2006 --- but note the pool of light blue water offshore in 2007

Comparison 2006 and 2007 SST

Look how much difference a week makes for numbers of dandelions in bloom – this is same place shot at slightly different angles

Peak Dandelion bloom

Elsewhere I have suggested dandelions and peak plankton bloom in Hecate correlated – suggests about a month behind schedule from 2004 --2005 ---and 2006  see links below

Seed phase hasn’t happened yet in 2007

For me ‘going to seed phase signals the end of the ‘Spring Bloom’ – though many other flowers like Elderberry etc have yet to peak

Retrospect: Do Dandelions bloom ‘same time’ every year or dependant on weather (e.g., > soil temperature) In 2006 ----2005; and in 2004 show wide variation

Conclusion

While SST similar to 2006 both the dandelions and the main plankton bloom appear to be late --- implication that it is the warming (but not SST?) and not the hours of daylight (as in photo period) that is driving sequence in Plankton and dandelions.
