Spring Bloom in Hecate

May warmth and sunshine ‘fuels’ bloom

source of imagery

After the near storm force winds of last weekend  waters in Hecate again stabilizing vertically

If/ when get clear weather I will update this page

---

West Cost North America view

While harder to ‘recognize’ the material on this site is best for day to day imagery for Chlorophyll thus plankton bloom

While I have reduced size of image – can still clearly see the areas of bloom – especially in relatively shallow areas East of Vancouver Isl --- are in full bloom

Global view w Modis AQUA

Sunny days bring full bloom initiation

Note area marked 1 – shallow shelf between QCI and mainland beginning to go into full bloom --- the Eastern side of Vancouver Island has been in full bloom for some time – but now the western side ‘taking off’ (2) – as is the northern tip

Note too how the waters off WA (OR?) marked 3 are now in full bloom – I would predict this bloom will move north along with warmer waters

While color coding varies between imagers can read numbers --- note upwelling off OR and CA --

Correlation of SST and Chlorophyll bloom?

Most suggestive here is the light blue color coded water mass off West Coast Vancouver Island – which is the area with intensive plankton bloom(2 in image above) – And while not shown here the areas off California showing intense blooms in above imagery correlate with areas on SST graphics – in this case ‘cooler’ (relatively) upwelling areas – similar to that off Oregon in image left
