Waning you say?

Difficult to interpret

Rainy weather/ cloud cover obscure the view

This Aqua Modis satellite image is one of the few available

Implication here that bloom is (still?) fairly active in Hecate

What is going on???

Note bloom most intense in shallow areas 1 & 2 for example

-- Perhaps then strong winds have ‘stirred things up’

Then how to explain this??

The areas blooming off California coast are ‘easily’ attributable to upwelling

But what about southern BC and WA coast? --- Perhaps runoff from the Fraser and Columbia rivers are bringing nutrients into the marine waters – but both sides of Southern Vancouver Island are blooming ---- implication to me is that strong winds have mixed in the river waters thus ‘rejuvenating’ the bloom

-- hypothesis supported by SST anomalies below

Previous File

Last week I was predicting BC north Coast would heat up and the bloom was ‘waning’ --- but looks like high winds have upset that prediction locally --- while area 3 in image left is ‘classical’ upwelling --- perhaps a BC version is involved in ‘area 2’

This is the kind of thing one would expect with ‘global warming’ --- and we will see if it persists

April thru June was cold but not especially rainy

A ‘dry’ cold?--- implications again that it is wind that is keeping BC ocean cooler

Previous this year -
