Marine Mammal Regulation Consultations

Denise, Marilyn and Merriam

DFO Local contact, manager and science rep along with enforcement give talk emails

The Brochure right is well done
Most of the other material is available on the Consultation Web site – except the technical article
THE CONSERVATION BASIS FOR THE REGULATION OF WHALE WATCHINGIN CANADA BY THE DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES AND OCEANS:A PRECAUTIONARY APPROACH. Jon Lien Memorial University of Newfoundland St. John's, Newfoundland Canadian Technical Report of Fisheries and Aquatic Science 2363

New Regulations require consultation – plus SARA looming

Present regulation (Section 7: ‘shall not disturb, unless authorized to’ – too vague. --- but see the American counterpart “harassment” at 2 levels etc – tougher --- But tightening up the wording has consequences – potentially for the Whale Watching operators – who were at the meeting – as were the Recreational fishers etc

A local committee?? – Educational??

Contact Denise locally, one idea was having a committee here that would send a member to “regional forum” –using for model how consultation with the gill-netters or trollers, etc are currently dealt with by DFO. A familiar DFO model but not very useful at engaging other interests or community values.

Interested?—contact Denise or check out the consultation web site
 – next step is to fill out Workbook (online) and submit before March 15th 2003
