Chthamalus spp

Upper intertidal

It’s small

Here it is mixed in with Balanus glandula and often easily (below) distinguished by size and color

Diagnostic

Characters

See the “cross” or t

Overlap easier to see in Balanus

Once recognized by size or colour it will be seen to cover large areas in upper intertidal

But neither character is reliable as all barnacles are small early in their development (right is immature semibalanus from burn site) and I have seen marked colour differences (epiphytes?) even when all same species

Magnified

With a magnifying glass it is easier to distinguish Balanus and Chthamalus. The “cross” seen easily the overlap of Rostrum more obvious in glandula

Found extensively from top to lower zones

Ain’t supposed to be here

The larger barnacle is Semibalanus,

The small ones are not immature (the photo taken in late winter). I see no differences between these Chthamalus and ones in upper intertidal.

Note too the diversity of life (limpets, snails , periwinkles) in this small world
