Young Eagle Visits Triple

No Fear?

Allows us t o approach it within 5 meters

Presumably its parents spoke to it about landing at Station, because this was only time so bold. A week or so later the juveniles had disappeared – as is case every year

Eagles and Gulls have a long debate over who will sit on the ‘nesting’ island – settle in compromise—you don’t eat eggs  OK?

In late June about 4 juveniles and 4+ adults had a ‘family reunion” --- soon after all the juveniles were gone and not seen again with adults but seemed to form there own group– see video Young eagles & debate WMF 370K

A week later only the 4 immature eagles show up – and again ‘debate’ (unsuccessfully) with gulls over who controls the island WMF 591Kb

Video of this sequence here --- as WMF file 350K

Look at those feet!

Here is WMF of the parent eagle calling

Wandering Tattler a few late travelers pass by – this one doesn’t bob – but does slip on kelp

Enough here to make the ID as a Plover—necklace and whit on face imply – Semipalmated  Western Sandpiper. (?)

Breeding plumage (above)of Surfbird?? Below tail black bar = surfbird – breeding browns in plumage don’t show up in photo

Diving Stragglers & quick returnees

Harlequins early in June with males and females

Later in month only (returned?) males – molt begun in a few

Few scoters seen at all

Some loons showed up for a few day

Stay here all year

Oyster catchers flock in June
187K WMF format – flying w calls
 precedes breeding?

Breeding plumage: white patches and red ‘eye patch’ and head crests as seen in video

I don’t see pelagics diving for “seawwed” yet so suspect not nesting till later

(Video soon)
