The Proposal--- heavy logging comes to a low producing area—

Looking for Cedar/ Cypress?

Banks Sprawl

This is a large spread out proposal covering almost 1000 acres of the more productive lands on Banks Island.

Presumably the area is high in cedar but the total volume per hectare is relatively low.(see table below) This is going to be expensive wood to cut (roads, etc.) and may have problems regenerating

The Donaldson Lake series

Note the road and “previously sold” legend of large cutblock west of Donaldson. This appears to be the poorest laid out block in area. Presumably all those red streams are fish bearing. One suspects the roads have already caused environmental damage, but need recent aerial photos.

One can predict there is going to be problems.

If not in the engineering then in the regeneration.

Still the area represents SB attempt to go into areas usually avoided by industrial loggers and so deserves watching closer and support by logging community.

I suggest should be viewed by public as an experiment. We should see if logging HEL can be profitable and sustainable.

Biodiversity

Map (sic)

While this is called a “biodiversity map” it actually separates out polygons on their productivity.

The map illustrates that MOF is going after the better sites (hence the sprawl to get between them).

A counter argument is that the large areas left behind are sufficient to provide food and shelter for any “islanders”.

Need to know what species and what habitats need protection, if any.
