West Fraser Mill sold & to be torn down

In 1995 it was worth a whole supplement to cheer

Now it is gone (and not a whimper this time)

This site has already discussed West Fraser buying the bankrupt Wedeene site. At the time it was promised the company would be here for a long time after making this hefty sawmill investment – then the Japanese market for cants fell thru. WFT sold its cutting rights to Triumph Timber. And more recently the Industrial site to a group from Terrace

Why Sell the Sawmill??

Numerous answers from people in the industry--- the guys from Terrace are not into saw milling – it takes a certain culture

Another person looked at me incredulously when I asked “why burn up your capital’? Couldn’t you just leave it unused?

Taxes he said simply.

He mentioned some figure over 50T$ per month. Another source put it at 14T$/ per month. Get rid of the sawmill and the taxes go way down immediately.

Another source said this auctioneer is already giving out detailed bid sheets for the equipment

Prime industrial land reverts to low use

There is a lot of History here

A lot of government ‘development’ money has flowed into this site --- and been lost – I will write that history another day
