Deconstructing Herring

Both these date from the 1970s; the implication on left is very small areas of spawn—and on right appears most extensive area for herring is on Central Coast (064)

One can look at each of these areas individually—and Big Bay (042) in Prince Rupert area is most productive; followed by Kitkatla --- Central Coast extensive but scattered spawn sites – Here is Higgins Passage for comparison

 

What are the herring stocks?
Right is the 2001 figure showing 3 populations: NC CC and QCIs. I will explore this in another page – it is controversial – First nations’ “traditional ecological knowledge” sees it differently as do some scientists working on Alaskan “stocks”
