Deborah Jeffrey didn’t run for re-election

I have not been meeting the needs of my young daughter, despite the best of my intentions

It is with deep regret that I am informing you of my intention to not seek re-election for office of the President for this upcoming term. It has been an extremely difficult decision for me, It is with deep regret that I am informing you of my intention to not seek re-election for office of the President for this upcoming term. It has been an extremely difficult decision for me, but it is the necessary and right one at this time. While I am deeply committed to serving the Nation, I have always stated that I could not be an effective leader if I could not be an effective parent. While I have been working hard to meet the needs of the Nation, I have not been meeting the needs of my young daughter, despite the best of my intentions. She is my source of joy arid inspiration and I find that too much time is spent away from her. Although I am not running for president, I will continue to serve the Nation to the best it is the necessary and right one at this time. Compare with Nisga’a governance

(It is difficult for an outsider to tell if this minimalist view is D Jeffrey’s or the consensus of the Tsimshian Nation)

At the end of the day, we will have seven separate treaties to reflect the unique needs of each of our communities. It protects the autonomy and authority of each community and its need to make decisions on behalf of its citizens. While we have been focusing on the needs of each community, we have not yet come together as a Nation to decide what to delegate down to the Tribal Council. This has impacted significantly on the issue of unity for the Nation and we must work hard to address it. Our treaty team has primary responsibility for negotiating and the office of the President has a very limited role in the treaty process --- Both of above taken from President’s Annual Report 2002

Tsimshian Nation??

Lax Kw'alaams Fisheries Litigation which was file in Supreme Court on October 8th

I take this to be good synopsis:

The legal action claims declarations that the Plaintiffs have aboriginal rights and title to harvest and sell on a commercial scale all species of fisheries resources harvested within the Lax Kw'alaams traditional territory

My prediction is that with recent court cases--Taku, Haida etc that this case has good chance of getting control at least of "resource sites" and will completely change face of commercial fishing in BC

AMNH Canoe to be repatriated??

This seemed such an interesting story I did up a full page on Harvey Brooks’ quest to bring back his grandfathers canoe
